The ocean is our life support system on Earth, and yet we still know so little about it.
The COP15 of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has now started in Montreal, Canada, with a central focus on the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework – an ambitious global plan for the protection of biodiversity. This framework will contain a new set of global goals and targets for biodiversity, including aquatic biodiversity across marine, coastal, and freshwater ecosystems. Several ocean-focused events will take place during this important time period between 7 and 19 of December.
At this COP15, the Global Ocean Observing System invites nations to join the global conversation on ocean observations in support of the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.
Take a look at our flyer and make sure not to miss these events of special relevance to the global ocean observing community:
- An Ocean of Life: Knowledge and Solutions for Marine and Coastal Biodiversity under the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework
When: 16 December | 8:30 – 13:00 EST
Where: Rio Conventions Pavilion, Blue Zone
LIVESTREAM
Organized by: IOC-UNESCO
GOOS Panelists: Anya Waite (CEO at Ocean Frontier Institute, GOOS Co-Chair)
This event will explore the challenges and opportunities to move from knowledge to action in marine and coastal ecosystems in the context of the post-2020 Framework. It will bring together high level speakers from government, science, industry, and philanthropy to explore the data, infrastructure and knowledge needs of different user groups to inform policy and decision making and showcase global solutions for conserving and restoring marine biodiversity in a changing climate.
The event will also launch a major new publication highlighting the role of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development in achieving the ambitions of the post-2020 Framework.

When: 13 December | 18:15 – 19:45 EST
Where: Business and Industry Organizations Meeting Room 514A
Organized by: UN-Oceans
GOOS Panelists: Emma Heslop (GOOS Programme Specialist)
In this landmark year for the ocean, ocean action has been advancing on multiple fronts. The 2022 UN Ocean Conference held in Lisbon generated hundreds of new voluntary commitments and a political declaration aimed at scaling up ocean action based on science and innovation for the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14. This UN-Oceans side event will provide an opportunity for UN-Oceans members to: highlight their respective potential roles in, and contribution to, the implementation of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, with a particular focus on ocean issues; discuss ways to strengthen and promote coordination and coherence of UN system activities in support of the implementation of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework; and share insights on ways in which the Post-2020 Framework can serve as a catalyst for greater synergies to advance ocean action and achieve internationally agreed goals.
